- To subscribe in Mail Mode which means that you receive every message as a separate email, send a blank message with the single word Subscribe in the subject line to:
and no additional text. You may put some text in the body of the message if your email software will not send blank messages.
- To subscribe in Digest Mode, which means that several postings made to orchid-talk will be consolidated together and sent to you as a single large message, follow the above proceedure but send your mesage to:
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, send an email with the single word Unsubscribe as the subject to:
or
(whichever is approriate). Your email must come from the address you want removing otherwise the automated software will not work.
- Please post your messages in plain text format.
- When posting a message, send it to:
even if you subscribe in digest mode. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode as appropriate.
- It is useful to provide a Subject line relevant to the topic of your message when
starting a new thread but preferably not as the first line of your message. Please start new threads with a new email rather than using the reply option.
- When posting a reply, please don't quote the entire original message (especially
if it is a long one!), trim it to just enough to make sense of your reply.
- Try to include a name/identifier, which is more friendly than just your email address - it
doesn't have to be your real name, just a nickname if you are very privacy-conscious.
- Signatures at the ends of posts are very much encouraged. Some systems only include the mailing list name and address in the routing information, so many on the list will not know who wrote unsigned posts, especially if there is no identifier (see above).
- Please don't SHOUT. Writing in capitals to emphasise a point is unacceptable to many internet users. For emphasis it is customary to use *asterisks* to indicate characters in bold, /slashes/ to indicate italics and _underscores_ to indicate underlining. A smiley, to indicate light-hearted remarks, is represented by :-) in plain text. You may need to tilt your head to see it!
If you change your email address please follow the above procedures to Subscribe your new address and Unsubscribe your old address.
Most digital pictures should be re-sized before sending. If you are not sure how to do this, Picasa from Google is a useful tool, as a special size for emailing can be set. Copies can then be emailed from Picasa, without changing your original files. Spreadsheets are preferred in CSV format, so that they can be dropped into any spreadsheet software. Please 'zip' any files other than JPEGs, and do not send huge files as they take up a great deal of bandwidth and annoy other subscribers. Do ensure you are not infringing any copyright. Please try to keep each attachment to a maximum size of 100K for the sake of those subscribers not on a broadband connection.
To change from Mail Mode to Digest Mode there are two steps:
- First, send an email with the subject Unsubscribe to:
as detailed above.
- Second, send another email with the subject Subscribe to:
to start receiving the digest version.
- Similarly, use the same method to change from Digest Mode to mail Mode by sending your emails to
and
respectively.
N.B.
Please use the above methods to change subscription details, etc. where possible as the server is unlikely to make typographical errors! However, if you are unable to use your original email address for any of the above operations, please contact
(who is only human and has been known to make typographical errors) for help.
The list is usually quite busy, although there can be quiet periods. Don't forget to check your mailbox on a regular basis, particularly if you have a
limited quota email account as these can quickly become full and cause messages to be bounced back to the server. Subscribers whose mail is returned for a period of three weeks or so will be deleted!
If you require messages to be suspended for a period of time, please contact
with details of the dates involved.
