Thanks, Lynda!
That is great news... I shall await until Spring and hope for all the best. I can't even remember what was the seed pod I sent you, but I am sure it will be something rather nice!
Thanks again,
Francis

Hello Francis..
Yes, indeed, you shall have plants (assuming the last re-plate goes well). The one seed that germinated proliferated when it should have differentiated and there are many little plants there now instead of one. There are one or two that could leave flask now but, maybe best wait until the Spring and new growing season....
I will be re-plating them shortly and new media with more space should see them grow on well. I will keep you posted.
regards,
Lynda

About 6 or 5 years ago I was at the Chelsea Flower Show and I saw a great plum red lycaste on the Burnhams stand. Unfortunately it had been bought by Henry Oakeley but thet had another back at the nursery. I reserved it and it has just flowered. It is a hybrid L. Silvares X(L. Shoalhaven X L.Koolena) but has not been registered.
The flower is 2 inches wide and grows in a huge 6 inch pot

Hello Dennis,
I thought you would like to see the attached of Lyc.'Geyser Gold' x Lyc. (Apricorn Vulcan) x Angul. 'Paul Bripp' which is exploring the same area of colour as your hybrid lycaste. This flower is 105mm across and I hope for more flowers next year.

Gosh what a lovely colour. Should it be Paul Gripp? Maybe I'm wrong. Don't
see many Lycaste/ Anguloas for sale now; especially Wyld Court hybrids.
What happened to them all?

Lovely Lycastes. It's good to see such strong colours. I passed on most of the (not very many) Lycastes that I had because they were taking up so much bench space but I have a few now growing on bark mounts. I think that may be the way forward for me − they take up less space and dont need the flowers to be staked.

As always Geoff a very fine crop and very good pictures. I particularly like the Cychnoches and the Macradenia. Do you have a pic of the whole Macradenia plant to put up? I would also like to know more about it's culture.

490 Macradenia brassavolae , var albiflora. Four spikes this year, and the new foliage is good ; the older foliage is a rather mottled yellow, but it occurs to me its been in the same compost for three years now. Big repot coming up, then, and I'll try and propagate from the leafless back-bulbs I'll take off, although doubt the success possibilities.

Here is the complete plant − in maybe a 5 inch pot. This years foliage is
good − a nice dark green , and larger leaves than before ; the previous
years foliage is now yellow and mottled. I realise that its been in the same
pot for 3 years now. In seedling size bark and moss, − the roots are quite
fine − hanging up − because of the pendant spikes − above the ;level of the
lights but getting good natural light in the upper part of the greenhouse.
Cattleya temperatures. It is actually a member of the Laeliniae. There are
quite a few back bulbs now (leafless) but they are not much bigger than say
two matchsticks placed side-by-side , I indeed to take them off and try to
propagate, although I'm not too optimistic.

Peter, As I said earlier Eric Young are now makimg some dreat hybrids and they can be had through Burnhams. Foxdale Orchids also used to sell a good rangr of hybrids among their Stanhopeas at Peterborough. Ecuagenera also will import species and some hybrids to main UK shows.
Why it is assumed that all Lycaste, Anguloa and their hybrids are large I do not understand. Many of mine are in 4 inch pots and are 18in (45cm) tall.
Andy, best of luck growing on bark. In Ecuador we only saw 1 lycaste in a tree and that was in the fork that was full of leaves and moss

Hi All,
Attached are two photos of orchids in bloom at the moment.
The Paph. I'm particularly please with as I bought it from Geoff more than
six years ago and this is the first year I've managed to get it to flower!!
The Bepi. I purchased in Singapore in 2006 but that one flowers each year!
It's rather chilly here this morning!!! Those 'yellow' snow clouds are
approaching from the North East!

A few more blooms from the bottom of the garden!
'Samurai' is the best I've managed to achieve with this plant.
Bl. Morning Glory is the first year with two flower spikes, each with 4
blooms that are 5 inches across.

How on earth do you manage to grow orchids in minus 6C? 35C here today and it's nearly summer.
We are off to Bangkok on Thursday for the orchid show at the Rose Garden. A sight to behold. An orchid show held under shadecloth would you believe. The attached pix show how they do it. Thse are from last years show. You can see the shadecloth hung in the trees and the sales tents around the outside. These pix do not do it justice, it is a great place for orchid lovers to go. This will be our second year there and we are already planning a third visit after the WOC in Singapore 2011.

Well done Tony. The gratrixianum is a good one − better than I remember. It
seems to have died out in my collection, or is one of the many lost label
not flowering plants. My paphs did not do very well once I moved down here
6 years ago. A couple of years in hydroculture didn't improve matters − on
the contrary. Since returning to the old bark and moss system they have
improved − but oh how long it takes to get a paph back into flowering ways
!. My P.Susan Booth − badly damaged by frost in 1994 is still not back to
flowering although the number of growths is now increasing and the size
too...At least I do have at least one often 3 paphs in flower at any one
time − but a far cry from my days in Worcestershire before I retired to the
Cotswolds, when I always had a couple of dozen − with fewer plants too.
The Bepi is interesting − I can see Mariae there, and pseudoepidendron too,
but obviously on a very much dwarfed plant and reduced spike − my
pseudoepidendron is 75cm high and the new spike looks likely to have 40 or
more flowers − but has been called a hybrid − I'll post a pic when they
open.

It was a slip of the pen, as it were − it is actually a Degarmoara -
abbreviation Deg, not Den . The parentage − ( Samurai) is Brassia
verrucosa, Milt spectabilis, and Odont hallii, together making up 50% then
Onc schroederianum the other 50% .
I have what at first sight is a similar hybrid Oncidium , in flower at the
moment, (Onc.Debutante) see pic. The parentage here is O.cariniferum and
Onc fuscatum − quite different. Not quite convergent evolution − more
convergent breeding !

How on earth do you manage to grow orchids in minus 6C? − at great expense,
believe me...
Yes, I've been to the Rose Garden, although I missed the World orchid Conf
there by a year or two. Mind, that was the trip when I was taking pics at a
salt farm, and fell in. end of expensive Nikon camera − and lens. I had to
go to Bangkok to buy a replacement − and later got the cost back from my
insurance company − happy days − apart from the orchids in the second part
of the holiday, in the north of the country.

OK! OK!
I've (now) looked at the label (rather than just view the pseudo bulb...)
and it states Odontonia Samurai. I bought it from David Stead in 2007 or
2008.
Very attractive no matter what the name!
By the way Geoff, my 'Winter wonderland' is showing a flower spike growing.
If it gets a move on it will match the 'Winter wonderland' outside!!!

For the benefit of Tony Watkinson and others living in a warmer climate, I
attach a photo taken this afternoon of the garden behind our house.
If you look carefully, you can just make out the end wall of the greenhouse
in the centre of the picture.
As Geoff says, it gets expensive heating........but I don't smoke and don't
go chasing women now!
Enjoy Bangkok Tony!

In some ways I envy you − all that real snow − I'm not kidding , I used to
enjoy walking in snowy landscapes, when living in the Midlands in the 60's
and 70's perhaps it was, when we had a series of winters when the lakes in
Sutton (Coldfield) park froze solid so you could walk across them...mind
you, I was 50 years younger then.
Down here a mile from the sea, in that little strip between about Weymouth
in the west and say Ventnor in the I of W as the eastern end, the climate
is that bit softer ( we have a lot of wild flowers not found anywhere else
in UK for example) and snow is something of a rarity. We have had a little
dusting on the lawn twice recently, but always gone within an hour or two.
Mind you, the effect is very local. I go inland to my Health Club for
exercise and like to do this first thing in the day, so as to have a free
day afterwards. I leave home at 6.15 am most days. This morning it was 1 deg
C here, and 7 miles inland it was minus 4 − according to my car outside
thermometer − perhaps a bit pessimistic − but you get the picture. Hard
frost on roofs, and the lawn, the occasional dusting on the ground
otherwise, but that's all. So I walked in the New Forest three times last
week ( only modest mileage nowadays in view of my age − 6 or 7 miles
usually) , and I'm hoping to be out again later this week − I need to wrap
up of course − goodness knows how many layers of extra thermal underwear and
fleece jacket, − it takes me 10 minutes to get undressed in order to spend a
penny... but it great to be out on such days.
But I do love that black and white effect − with just a bit of colour in the
plant pots and the shed , in your picture − enjoy it. Perhaps it's the
pictures I enjoy more than I would the reality nowadays.....
Geoff
