Hi Everyone. This is the first time I have plugged into this forum and it looks to be most helpful.

Yes, Geoff, I take the Orchid Digest and I agree that it is an excellent magazine. Not cheap for just four copies per year but the production quality is outstanding above any other orchid magazine and the information is top notch too with people like Harold Koopowitz on the editorial board. The web address is http://www.orchiddigest.com/ if people want to take a look.

I agree with Geoff, again, that UV treated bubble wrap is essential. LBJ will sell you any length.

I've just bought a Howeara − or something like that. and trying to search
about it, but I can't see any such hybrid name listed in Orchidwiz.

Does this ring any bells ?

(I really don't like adding my comments at the top − it doesn't flow
at all − rather like read the answer first then read the question -
but seeing as most of you seem to prefer it I suppose I must bite the
bullet.)

Yes, we had a long discussion about Howeara Lava Burst quite a while
ago, no doubt it's in the archives. I haven't had much luck with them
but that may have something to do with the Rodriguezia component,
which according to Janet Plested is not the easiest to grow.

Thanks Tricia ; I had another look in Orchidwiz, and this time found it.
Maybe I was misspelling the first time, although usually that Application is
very user friendly.
I also had a look on our website ,but I don't think the Archive is
searchable except starting with a date ? My plant is Howeara Lava Burst ,
maybe the clone "Puanini" , which btw is the name of the originator.

So if any organised member − or better organised than I am ( not too
difficult, at times....) has any reference I'd be pleased to hear.

I have searched for info elsewhere, and found some , inc' one plant with 8
spikes growing in Aquaculture , from the pic, using Hortag (?) small
artificial clay pebbles about the size of peas , so I may try that for my
plant, which at present is in a fairly open bark and does not look too
secure, from the way it is flopping about, but it does have a decent spike
with a lot of good dark red flowers , a better colour than many of the
illustrations I found. But the reference says "1500-3000 foot candles" (
which is very bright indeed) but also says moderate light or light shade (
which would be say 500-750 FC) in my reckoning. The hardish leaves suggest
fairly bright, to me.

Which , as a spin-ff, suggests how I might do better with my other
Rodrigueza species.

Did I say thanks ? No ? Well,I should have done. So, thanks Tricia.

Hi Geoff, and How are e???

Grown many years ago by several people, but they never caught on, possibly due to the fact that they were short lived.

Hello Geoff,
Yes there is a plant called Howeara. One that is popular out here is (racking my brains) Mary Elizabeth. Small yellow and brown flowers on about a 5 or 6" stem and about 10 to 15 flowers.. I will see if I can find a picture and send you.

Max.

Hello Geoff,

The search facility is a little basic in that it is a Google freebie.
As long as you put the correct spelling in the search box it will
return a result but just gives the whole page without highlighting
the relevant bit. One of these days I will figure out how to do
something better, I hope.

You can't have everything, where would you put it?

Howeara's have very fine roots and potting in stones can cause a real mess when trying to repot as the weight of the stones tear the roots off. The best of these that I have seen were mounted and grow to quite big plants (for a Howeara)

And the only reason that they may be short lived is because you kill them!!

Happy growing

Hello everyone,

I bought a Phalaenopsis speciosa in April this year and it had these flowers:

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f359/rockhop/IMG_9025b.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f359/rockhop/IMG_9026b.jpg

It bloomed in August:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f359/rockhop/IMG_9458b.jpg

Current bloom:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f359/rockhop/IMG_9881b.jpg

The flowers that it produced at my place do not open out flat, so the flowers appear slightly elongated from top to bottom. Does anyone know why they do not open fully?

Cheers,
Esther

I see from the RHS mag. the bureaucrats of the European Union have thought
up another directive − withdrawing from sale copper based fungicides. If
you want some stuff such as PBI cheshunt compound, pond algae control and
presumably bordeaux mixture you have to get it before the end of november.
Dont know if there any replacements.

Well, copper is poisonous, and we have only been using it this way for about
a hundred years. And everyone knows (knew ?) hundreds of people who got sick
from drinking their Bordeaux mixture because they confused it with
St.Emilion ( is St.Emilion a Bordeaux or a claret ? − doesn't matter − it
makes my point...

What is it about our EU representatives and politicians in general, when it
comes to Europe ? They are as tough as old boots when talking tom English
ne3spapers, and meek as mice once they get to Strasbourg...

But as it happens I have an E-mail from my MEP in by inbox − I'll bend her
ear about this − why don't we all do it ?

I seem to be having more and more Senior Moments these days -
although I am told the politically correct term is now Intellectual
Interlude − and am not quite sure about the dilution rate of Savona.
Is it 10ml or 20ml per litre? Some of Alan's Masdevallias have a
little mealy bug and I want to spray them but with a mixture that is
strong enough to work but not so strong it might damage them.

Do please try to keep some messages coming as distractions are very
necessary at this time. There is a hiatus now as I have organised
everything possible, the numbness is wearing off and I have far too
much time to think.
