As there was no response to the news that RHS Rosemoor was trying to get an Orchid show in the West Country or on the methods that Charlesworth used to grow his magnificent Odonts I guess that we must wait for some orchid pictures to ooh and aah about or regurgitate methods of getting rid of bugs and fungus we have talked about for the last ---- years.

Dennis.
I may have to resort to the methods that Charlesworth used with his odontoglossum collection. Last autumn I purchased an exhibition odontoglossum crispum from McBeans or Burnhams for £75.00.Stupidly perhaps, I converted my beautiful plant into semi hydro.

Imagine my horror this morning when I looked at it and found three large but quite shriveled bulbs, one half grown new shoot but not one live root, all the roots are rotten.

I (try to grow it!) in a north facing window in an unheated room.

Help please!! can it be saved?

Regards

Cyrus

Mornin' Cyrus,

I am certain that Dennis will give you much help, but can I ask.....any chance of a photo of the rotten roots and the 'medium' that they were surrounded with?

I feel quite sure that all is not lost and that your plant can look forward to better times.

Cheers, Rodge.

There are two methods I would try. First buy some perlite from a garden centre and wash the dust away and plant the cleaned plant about half an inch down in a pot of perlite and stand in a saucer of water. new roots should grow from the new shoot. Second is plant it in moss.
But for that price it must be a large plant so you could split it in two and try both methods.
If you live near Rosemoor you could bring it to the Orchid Weekend where there is a potting demonstration.

Hi Dennis

If you think it is of interest to show your plants at Rosemore it follows that others might be interested in showing theirs on the net.

The majority of my postings get absolutely no response − I can think of several things I have asked for help about recently without comment and I have put up lots of photos that apparently leave the group un-oohed!

There has been a little bit of comment in the past about what some refer to as "lurkers". I don't like the expression as it makes it sound disreputable to read a public forum. However any community has to have enough producers with respect to consumers and in the case of this forum I don't think that is so. If people want a group then they need to be responsible for making a contribution however small. I do try every now and then but it is a bit like flogging a dead horse!

At the Dresden EOC I saw a new book , but copies were not for sale. (
published 2009) I want a copy....

This is called "Laelia Purpurata" and has pictures of 200 (?) of the known
and named varieties...

By Obama Instituto , Brasileiro.

I have the ISBN , BUT Amazon don't recognise it.

I have e-mailed the author (?) / publisher (?) at the address I noted down,
but my e-mail bounced.

Any suggestions, anyone ?

Andy, I apologise unreservedly for my dereliction in the ooh
department! I always enjoy your pics, but admit I don't often ooh in
public, so to speak. Will try to do better :-)

It is my understanding that most of the 'lurkers' (a legitimate
technical term, by the way) on this list don't speak unless they feel
they have sonething worthwhile to say, but what is and what isn't
worthwhile? − all very subjective. One man's meat and all that.

Can't comment on Charlesworth, except to say that I heard Alan
Greatwood give a talk at Devon Orchid Society in the early 1980s − I
still have the notes I took − when he was in charge of Miss Dinah
Albright's collection. Very interesting and informative.

With regard to the show at RHS Rosemoor, I have put some details on
the websites I look after, but I do think the RHS could be a bit more
pro-active on their site. Anyway, I hope it is a success.

Geoff, I am interested in your tales about Charlesworth's.
I was told by the late Jack King, that they treated you like the most important customer they have ever had; even if you bought only one plant.
I like hearing about the 'old' days. We can learn a lot from the tales from the past.
What did Charlesworth's grow their Odonts. in? Osmunda and a pointed stick?
