Inspired by the pictures of Roy's Phrag and Esther's Phalaenopsis in
plastic disposable beakers, I potted a small Phrag similarly. It has done
well and I would like to grow more plants like this. Most of the ones I
want to 're-pot' are too large for the beakers available from the
supermarket, so I wondered what larger vessels may be used and where to
obtain them in the UK?

Because I do not grow Phrags [as yet], but have conquered the growing of Paphs, may I just ask if these items that you are seeking are see through ?

Hi Jim,
Whilst I have not tried it myself I have read that a brown paper bag is the correct way to catch the seed. Plastic does sweat and "rots/moulds" the seed I am told by the "experts". The other way is to place the pot on a large sheet of white paper provided you can get somewhere draftproof and the seed should fall on the paper and can be collected.
Good luck .
Gordon.

I haven't taken a photo of mine yet, but the following are on the OT
website:
http://www.orchid-talk.co.uk/archives/2007/images/11november/pages/Semi_Hydro_001.html
http://www.orchid-talk.co.uk/archives/2007/images/11november/pages/Semi_Hydro_002.html
I bought similar plastic beakers from a local supermarket, and for plants
that will fit in a 3-inch pot they are ideal. However, I haven't been able
to source larger clear plastic vessels − doesn't matter what they are
marketed as, just as long as they are equivalent to a 5 to 6-inch pot at
least.
Thanks for the offer to keep a look-out for something.

It is the time of year for lichens and all the rest of the algee to grow on the leaves. Currently we wipe it off manully but it is not fun on 1000+ plants.
Anybody know of a product to spray on that will kill this fungus? I have heard that physan 20 inhibits it. Any others?

Jim,
Yes, stay away from non-perforated plastic. I use small pollination
bags, or small homemade envelopes made from coffee filters.
Pollination bags can be hard to find, but coffee filters are
everywhere − cut to size, fold, and staple, sew, or paperclip the
edges, and fit loosely around the capsule. Coffee filters hold up
well, too, when wet, and dry quickly.
BTW, Where are you in C.R.? I am taking another university class

You said: So I can see what's happening root-wise without disturbing the

I say: Why not try my Paph mix, after all, they are so very similar to
Paphs. And that is: A 'Seven part mix'. Three parts VERMICULITE. Two
parts GRIT ABOUT 5 mm DIAMETER. Twp Parts of a ROUGH COMPOST. The type you
can get in a local Gardening Centre. Trade name goes by 'Roffys'.
This mix works very well, and it is the mix that I will use when I buy my
first Phrag, and I am SURE that it will work.
And then you said: Stiff enough when filled up with Hydroleca or Cambrian
Green.
I say: But they are not EPIPHYTES.
Good gardening, Rocky.

The someone named King is the late great ,Jack King, who lived in Haslemere
and was a member of the Wessex OS. Jack taught me a great deal about orchid
growing. He grew mainly Bifrenarias, Lycastes and Odonts. Plus a few other
odds and ends.
He thought Bifrenarias suffered from 'Ducks Disease' and went about
hybridising them. When he died the Westmores took his breeding stock and
continued down the line a bit. Not sure how far they got.
All the best,

Hi there Jean,
And yet another very gloomy, dull and fairly mild day here. No sunshine of course !!!
I have a 'Bee in my bonnet' when it comes to Phallys. I very often see them on the display table and it is then that I take a very good long look at them.
My main concerns are that a lot of them are just about falling out of the pot, due to the fact that they are not potted deep enough, meaning that the bottom leaf/leaves should be about pot rim level. That way the plant will not require 'dropping down' so often. Then there is the very light bark medium. Pieces of bark that are far to small and clog the airways.
I like to see a plant at the correct level and a good clean, large pieced medium. That's about all the plant requires.
Hope that you have masses of flowers in the coming months.
Regards, Rocky.

John, you are extremely lucky this has only just started to happen to you.
It is known as 'spoofing', as you have probably discovered. There is a
useful article here:
http://www.lse.ac.uk/itservices/help/spamming&spoofing.htm
My own address as well as the orchid-talk address were spoofed a long time
ago. You can imagine it would be difficult if I changed the list address!
In any case, it wouldn't help for long − a new address would fall victim to
the same thing eventually.
I use a program which acts in a similar way to Mailwasher and 'train' it to
spot and delete a lot of the junk, and my ISP's email filtering has helped
considerably. I'm sure other 'listers' will have some ideas too.

It's common. Unless you start getting lots of "out of office" messages which indicates you address has been fully hijacked and is being used to send millions of e-mails, then it's the second variety, ie only you are getting them. Spammers figure you'll open them and they usually get through some filters.

They are fed fullstrenght fertiliser each week in the growing season and inbetween they are watered. when the bulb is finidhed growing I stop feeding and watering but keep the rootr moist. My minimum temperature is 12C (55F) but this is UK. there are many fine growers in Cal in fact the there is a nursery in the north of your state that bought the Wild Court Collection of Lycastes and continued the breeding programme. I think it began with S..Yours started life in Australia.
Enjoy them they are a great flower.
